Gary Fudem, MD

Dr. Fudem

Dr. Gary Fudem is clinical professor of surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is also the codirector of the UMass Memorial Burn Unit.

Dr. Fudem is committed to giving his cosmetic surgery patients a very natural, youthful look. He focuses on the well-being of the whole person, inside and out.

After completing an undergraduate degree in Latin American Studies at Stanford University,
Dr. Fudem earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. He subsequently trained in a variety of specialties:

  • Residency, general surgery, at University Hospitals of Cleveland
  • Residency, plastic surgery, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester
  • Fellowship, hand surgery, at Hartford Hospital Combined Hand Service
  • Fellowship, microsurgery and transplantation, at University of California at Irvine

He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and was elected into the American Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Fudem has led more than 40 trips to underdeveloped countries in South America, Asia and Africa to treat those with congenital and burn deformities. Most recently, he traveled to Guatemala and El Salvador to operate on children with xeroderma pigmentosa, a rare birth defect that leaves kids completely unprotected from the sun so that they develop disfiguring skin cancers in infancy and often die from these by their early teens.  He has also operated on young women in India and Bangladesh victimized by domestic abuse called “dowry burning.”

Dr. Fudem is a reconstructive plastic surgeon and cosmetic surgeon. He has unique expertise in:

  • Skin aesthetics
  • Reverse-aging treatments
  • Facial rejuvenation surgery under local anesthesia
  • Skin resurfacing with deep chemical peels (including the phenol-croton oil peel)

In fact, he is one of the few cosmetic surgeons in the New England area who perform the phenol-croton oil peel. This process essentially erases all facial wrinkles, tones the skin and eliminates precancerous spots.
