Fat grafting is a popular filler choice

At the UMass Memorial Cosmetic Surgery Center in Worcester, MA, Dr. John Castle performs fat grafting, a revolutionary process that’s becoming one of the most desired procedures in plastic surgery. Our Worcester plastic surgeons offer fat grafting to our patients receiving breast augmentation or breast reconstruction, and to those who want to restore a youthful look to their faces.

Dr. Castle describes this safe, effective filler procedure that brings beautiful results.

Dr. Castle, what is fat grafting?

Fat grafting involves harvesting your own fat from one area of your body – generally the abdomen or thighs – and then injecting it into other areas through small incisions to add volume.

How is the fat withdrawn?

We use a small, flexible tube called a cannula to harvest the fat through liposuction surgery.

What are the benefits of fat grafting over other fillers?

It’s your own tissue, so it won’t be rejected by your body. And your own tissue tends to be softer than other cosmetic fillers, allowing us to easily shape and add contours to targeted areas for a smoother and more desirable effect.

In addition, unlike other filler procedures, fat grafting is used to reduce scarring or damage from radiation treatment, a real benefit to our patients with breast cancer.

Just as exciting, you’re removing fat from an area where you don’t want it through liposuction.

On which areas of the body do you focus your fat grafting expertise?

I work with many women who have had breast cancer, mastectomies and radiation damage. Fat grafting is an important part of the breast augmentation and breast reconstruction procedures I perform.

At our Worcester Cosmetic Surgery Center we also do facial fat grafting, which is like having a face lift, but without the surgery!

Should I be a certain age to consider fat grafting?

Fat grafting is truly a procedure for all ages. As long as you’re healthy enough to have day surgery, you’re a candidate for fat grafting.

When I’m selecting a plastic surgeon to perform a fat grafting procedure, what should I look for?

Make certain your surgeon is board certified and that the plastic surgery center where your procedure is performed is accredited. Our Cosmetic Surgery Center provides both of these benefits, as well as a staff that is caring and attentive to your needs and questions.

How long does the fat grafting procedure take?

Generally, the procedure is performed in less than two hours with general anesthesia. Afterward, you’ll experience some swelling and bruising, but that goes away after several months. You can return to your work and normal activities in one to two weeks thanks to the small incision at the injection site.

Is fat grafting permanent?

We’ve found that if the injected fat is still intact in the targeted area after four months, it remains so permanently. But remember, this is living tissue and responds just like any other fat cells in your body when you gain or lose weight over time.
